Travelling with Your Pet from Spain? We Handle the Paperwork

If you’re an expat, digital nomad or international resident living in the Madrid area and need to travel abroad with your dog or cat, you’ll likely need a CEXGAN certificate — Spain’s official veterinary export document issued by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA).

At Barvet, our veterinary clinic in Las Rozas de Madrid, we provide the full CEXGAN service in English. We know that navigating Spanish bureaucracy in a foreign language can be stressful, so we guide you through every step — from checking your destination’s requirements to issuing the final certificate.

We’re located in Las Rozas, just 20 minutes from central Madrid and conveniently close to Madrid-Barajas Airport. Our team is fluent in English and experienced with international pet travel to the UK, the US, and destinations worldwide.

What Is the CEXGAN Certificate?

CEXGAN stands for Certificación de Exportación Ganadera — the Spanish government’s digital platform for issuing official veterinary health certificates for animals leaving the country. Every country has different entry requirements for pets, and CEXGAN ensures your pet meets all of them.

Depending on your destination, the certificate may require:

RequirementDetails
MicrochipISO-standard microchip — must be implanted before the rabies vaccination.
Rabies vaccinationMust be current. If it’s a first-time vaccination, there’s a 21-day waiting period before travel.
Rabies titre testRequired for some destinations (e.g. China, some Middle East countries). Blood test showing ≥0.5 IU/ml antibodies.
DewormingInternal and/or external parasite treatment — timing varies by destination (e.g. 1–5 days before arrival for the UK).
Clinical examinationA vet check within 24 hours to 10 days before travel, depending on the country.
Additional vaccinesSome countries require vaccines beyond rabies (e.g. distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis).
Good to know: For EU countries, a valid EU pet passport is usually enough — no CEXGAN needed. For non-EU destinations (UK post-Brexit, USA, Morocco, Latin America, Asia, Middle East), a CEXGAN certificate is typically required.

When Should You Start?

Planning ahead is essential. Here’s a general timeline — exact deadlines depend on your destination.

WhenWhat to do
2–3 months beforeCheck rabies vaccination status. If a first vaccination or booster is needed, start now (21-day waiting period applies).
1 month beforeBook your appointment with us. If a rabies titre test is required, it needs to be done now (results take 2–3 weeks).
2 weeks beforeDeworming and any additional vaccines. We submit the CEXGAN application to the Ministry.
1–2 days beforeFinal clinical examination (timing depends on destination). Certificate is issued and ready to go.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Starting too late

Some destinations require tests done weeks in advance. If you contact us less than 2 weeks before your flight, we may not be able to meet all deadlines.

📄

Wrong certificate type

Each country has a specific ASE code. Using the wrong one means your certificate will be rejected at the border. We know exactly which one you need.

💉

Expired rabies vaccine

If the rabies vaccination has lapsed, it counts as a first-time vaccination — meaning a 21-day wait. Check your pet’s vaccination record early.

About Barvet — Your English-Speaking Vet in Las Rozas

Barvet is an integrative veterinary clinic located at Calle Andrés Segovia 7, Las Rozas de Madrid. We combine conventional veterinary medicine with holistic approaches including natural nutrition (BARF and home-cooked diets), natural and holistic therapies.

We’re well-known in the international community in the northwest Madrid area — Las Rozas, Majadahonda, Pozuelo, Boadilla and Torrelodones all have significant expat populations, and many of our clients are English-speaking families who appreciate being able to communicate clearly about their pet’s health.

Beyond CEXGAN certificates, we offer home visits for pets who are stressed by clinic environments — a service that’s especially popular with anxious dogs and senior cats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you really speak English at the clinic?

Yes — our veterinary team is fluent in English. All consultations, explanations and documentation can be handled entirely in English. You can also contact us in English via WhatsApp at +34 635 72 30 22.

Do I need a CEXGAN certificate to travel within the EU?

Generally no. For travel within EU member states, a valid EU pet passport with up-to-date rabies vaccination is sufficient. CEXGAN certificates are for non-EU destinations. However, some EU countries may have additional requirements — we can check for your specific destination.

How much does the CEXGAN service cost?

The cost depends on your destination and what your pet needs (vaccines, blood tests, deworming, etc.). Contact us for a personalised quote — we’ll tell you exactly what’s included before you commit.

Can you help with the return journey to Spain?

Yes. We advise you on what documentation you’ll need for the return trip before you leave. For many destinations, doing a rabies titre test before departure makes re-entry to Spain much simpler.

I’m moving to Spain with my pet — can you help?

While CEXGAN is specifically for exporting pets FROM Spain, we can certainly help you settle in. We offer full veterinary services, microchipping, EU passport issuance, and advice on Spanish pet registration requirements.

Do you offer home visits?

Yes! We provide house calls throughout Las Rozas and nearby areas. This is especially useful for anxious pets or for follow-up visits after travel. Ask us about availability when you book.
